Biting now

Where the rare fish are this week

Every Monday each public realm is dealt its own uncommon and rare fish for the week. Common fish bite at every pool, every day; these are the ones worth travelling for.

Leaderboards

Record catches and this week's top anglers

This week's board resets every Monday, and every species has a record waiting to be set.

How to start

Start fishing in four steps

Standing at a Fishing Spot already? Start at step one: you will be casting in minutes.

  1. Step 1

    Get the free HUD

Wear the free SL Colonies HUD and meter. It takes two minutes, and no roleplay is needed.

  2. Step 2

    Get your rod

Open Fishing from the HUD's tool screen. The first time, a fishing rod is put in your inventory: wear it as you would any tool.

  3. Step 3

    Find a Fishing Spot

Rivers, lakes, the sea and sky platforms across the realms. Stand within 40 metres of a pool and the HUD finds it.

  4. Step 4

    Cast, fight, land

Wait for the bite, then keep the line tight and give it room when it runs. Land it and it is yours, weighed to the gram.

Gear

Rods, bait and where to get them

Your first rod is free. Everything after that is made, traded and sold by players and the Masters.

  • Rods

Carpenters make the fishing rod, and player shops sell it. Fishermen unlock light, heavy and fly rods and fishing lines at their Master as they level: each changes how a fight plays, never how many fish you catch.

  • Bait and lures

A bare hook catches commons. Bait reaches the rarer fish: the Fisherman Master sells worms, bread paste, spinners and flies for CXP.

  • Sell your catch

Every fish is a real item. Sell it at a market hub for SLC coin, trade it to a cook, or keep it for the record.

    The market board

A large floor-standing bait tank, oak-framed with iron corner brackets, in a lakeside boathouse at golden hour beside a barrel and fish crates, a shoal of small silver baitfish swimming over gravel and water weed.

Bait tanks

Breed your own live bait

Live bait reaches the rarest fish a rod can hook. Keep a tank and you never run short: choose your water, stock it, feed it and keep its water right, and the shoal grows.

  1. Choose fresh or salt water. Each tank keeps one kind of bait fish at a time.
  2. Stock it with two or more. Live bait from your pack, or a small fish you have just landed.
  3. Feed them. Bait worms or maggots in fresh water, fish feed in salt. Fed and well, they breed, up to thirty fish.
  4. Watch the pH. Every fish has its band, and the water drifts as they grow. Eggshells raise it, peat moss lowers it. Out of band, fish die.
  5. Take live bait whenever you like. The tank always keeps two to breed from.

The Fisherman Master, who sells bait and lures

The Fisherman Master

Find the Fisherman Master

He sells bait worms, bread paste, spinner lures and dry flies for CXP, which every fish you land earns, wherever you fish, on your own land or someone else’s.

His stall opens with fishing; where to find him will be here.

The waters

Rivers, lakes, sea, and the waters still to open

A pool's owner chooses its water. As more public realms fish, new climates and habitats open, each with fish that live nowhere else.

Questions

New to fishing in SL Colonies?

Do I have to roleplay?
No. Wear the HUD and fish as you like. Roleplay is there if you want it, never required.
Is it free?
Yes. Joining SL Colonies, the HUD and the meter are free, and your first fishing rod is given to you the first time you wear the fishing HUD. Paid memberships are optional extras.
What do I need?
The free SLC HUD and meter, worn, and a fishing rod. The fishing HUD attaches from the SLC HUD's tool screen.
Where can I fish?
At any fishing pool in the realms: rivers, lakes, the sea, even sky platforms. A Fishing Spot flag marks each one. Pools on private land catch common fish only.
How does the fight work?
The fish runs and pulls; you keep the line tight without snapping it. Common fish are forgiving. Rarer fish fight longer and harder, and can get away.
When do the rare fish change?
Every Monday. Each public realm is dealt its own uncommon and rare fish for the week, so the best spot moves.
What is a catch worth?
Every fish is a real item: cook it, trade it, or sell it at a market hub for SLC coin. Every catch also earns CXP to spend at the Masters' shops. There are no L$ payouts.
